Treasures of the Law of God: Understanding the law of God vs, the commandments of God

Law of God

Titus 3:9 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

“Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfillment of the law” (Romans 13:10).

The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presses into its Luke 16:16.

The law has been abolished Ephesians 2:15

What do Romans and Galatians say about the law?

We are not under the law Romans 6:14; Gal. 5:18

We are dead to the law, Romans 7:4

We are delivered from the law, Romans 7:6

Christ is the end of the law Romans 10:4

The law was our schoolmaster to bring us to Christ, we are no longer under the schoolmaster. Galatians 3: 24-25.

Love fulfills the law. Romans 13:10

Law was weak Romans 8:3

The law was added because of transgressions Galatians 3:19

Bear each other burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ Galatians 6:2.

Romans 8:1-4 – “Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in

Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free

from the law of sin and of death.

For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending

His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin,

He condemned sin in the flesh so that the requirement of the Law might be

fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”

Above all things, love conquers all! LOVE IS THE THEME FOR OUR SALVATION! John 3:16

Galatians 5:14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even this; Thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself.

UNDERSTANDING THE LAW OF GOD VS, THE COMMANDMENTS OF GOD

The covenant (agreement) between God and His people at Mount Sinai provided the foundation for all of Israel's laws.

God delivered the Israelites from Egypt, and forth His instructions for them.

to obey His laws because he saved them from Egypt (Exodus 20:2).

The laws found in Exodus, Deuteronomy, Numbers, and Leviticus cover all areas of public life.

Following the Law would provide for the health and wholeness of the covenant community. The Ten Commandments are a summary of the Law (Exodus 20:2-17; Deuteronomy 5:6-21).

The Law is used in three different ways in the Bible.

1. Ten Commandments

The Expression “The Law” contains the Ten Commandments which are major set of laws within Law of Moses. This is evident in the book of James.

For He who said, “DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY,” also said, “DO NOT COMMIT MURDER.” Now if you do not commit adultery, but do commit murder, you have become a transgressor of the law. James 2:11 (NASB)

It is stated that if we commit adultery or murder, we have broken the Law. Those two commandments come from Exodus 20:1-17.

This demonstrates that the expression “The Law” can refer to the Ten Commandments.

2. Mosaic Law

“The Law” refer to the first five books of the Bible. We read this in Luke 24:44.

Now He (Jesus) said to them, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Luke 24:44 (NASB)

The Jews refer to the Old Testament as the “Tanakh.” It is divided into the Torah, Nevi’im, and Kethuvim.

·        The Torah is also called the “The Law,” “The Five Books of Moses,” or “The Prophets.”

·        The Nevi’im is also called “The Prophets.”

·        The “Kethuvim includes all the other books such as the Psalms, Proverbs, Song of Solomon, and the historical books.

3. The Tanakh

The expression “The Law” sometimes includes the entire Old Testament or Tanakh.

If you notice that 1 Cor. 14:21 refers to “The Law” and then quotes Isaiah 28:11. This is a loose quote. In the Law it is written,

“BY MEN OF STRANGE TONGUES AND BY THE LIPS OF STRANGERS I WILL SPEAK TO THIS PEOPLE, AND EVEN SO THEY WILL NOT LISTEN TO ME,” SAYS THE LORD. 1 COR. 14:21 (NASB)

When God gave commandments to Israel through Moses, these commandments were known as the Law.

Then Christ came and atoned for all the sins of mankind.  This fulfilled the Law of Moses and all the commandments that were designed to point people toward Christ.

When Paul talked about the Law, he was talking about the Law of Moses or the old commandments.

The old Law (of Moses) was replaced by the new commandments. None but Christ perfectly obeyed the laws and commandments.
