FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT vs WORKS OF THE FLESH.

FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT VS WORKS OF THE FLESH.

In the book of Galatians, chapter 5, verses 22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

The apostle Paul lists these qualities as evidence of a life transformed by the Holy Spirit. Here’s a breakdown of each aspect of the fruit of the Spirit according to Galatians:

Love: This refers to agape love, which is selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional. It’s the kind of love that seeks the best for others without expecting anything in return.

Joy: This is a deep, abiding sense of happiness and contentment that comes from knowing and being in relationship with God, regardless of external circumstances.

Peace: This is both an inner tranquillity and a harmonious relationship with others. It involves trust in God's promises and the absence of anxiety.

Patience: Also known as forbearance or long-suffering, this is the ability to endure difficult situations and people without getting angry or upset. It implies a long-term perspective and tolerance.

Kindness: This quality is about being considerate, compassionate, and generous to others. It’s an active desire to care for the well-being of others.

Goodness: Goodness involves moral integrity and the pursuit of righteousness. It means doing what is right and beneficial for others.

Faithfulness: This is about being reliable, trustworthy, and loyal. It involves steadfast commitment to God and others.

Gentleness: Also translated as meekness, this quality is about being humble and considerate in the way we interact with others. It involves strength under control and a gentle spirit.

Self-control: This is the ability to control one's desires, emotions, and actions. It’s about discipline and the power to resist temptation.

These qualities collectively represent the character and conduct of a person who is led by the Holy Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit is seen as evidence of a life aligned with God's will and transformed by His presence.

Work of the flesh

Health And Safety with solid fill

Galatians 5:19-21 King James Version outlined the work of the flesh as follows:

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these, Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,

20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

21 Envying, murders, drunkenness, revelling, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Here is a list of the works of the flesh as described in Galatians 5:19-21 (ESV):

1.     Sexual immorality: Engaging in sexual activities outside the boundaries set by biblical teachings.

2.     Impurity: Moral uncleanness in thought and action.

3.     Sensuality: Indulgence in excessive or inappropriate sexual behavior.

4.     Idolatry: Worshiping idols or anything else other than the one true God.

5.     Sorcery: Engaging in witchcraft or the use of magical powers.

6.     Enmity: Hostility and hatred towards others.

7.     Strife: Conflict and contention among individuals.

8.     Jealousy: Envy towards others, desiring what they have.

9.     Fits of anger: Uncontrolled outbursts of rage.

10. Rivalries: Competitive disputes leading to divisions.

11. Dissensions: Disagreements that cause discord within a group.

12. Divisions: Creating factions or cliques that disrupt unity.

13. Envy: Resentment and ill will towards others' success or possessions.

14. Drunkenness: Excessive consumption of alcohol leading to a loss of control.

15. Orgies: Participation in wild and immoral parties or revelries.

Flesh (sarx): The flesh denotes mere human nature, the earthly nature of man apart from divine influence.

The "works of the flesh" are described in Galatians 5:19-21 are behaviours and attitudes that are sinful and contrary to living a life led by the Spirit of God.

These works of the flesh are natural outcomes of living according to human desires and impulses rather than according to God's guidance.

The works of the flesh, represent a lifestyle that is self-centred and opposed to the ethical and spiritual standards of Christianity. Those who engage in these behaviours will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Paul emphasizes the need for Christians to turn away from these behaviours and to seek a life that reflects the transformative power of the Holy Spirit.

HOW TO OVERCOME THE WORK OF THE FLESH

Overcoming the works of the flesh requires a combination of spiritual practices, conscious decisions, and support systems. Here are some practical steps based on biblical teachings:

1. Cultivate a Relationship with God

  • Daily Prayer: Regular communication with God helps align your will with His. Ask for strength and guidance to resist temptation.
  • Bible Study: Immerse yourself in God’s Word. Scriptures provide wisdom and fortify your spirit against the desires of the flesh.

2. Walk by the Spirit

Paul urges us in Galatians 5:16, "But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh." Walking by the Spirit means living in continuous dependence on, and responsiveness to, the Holy Spirit.

  • Dependence on the Holy Spirit: Galatians 5:16 says, "Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh." Seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance daily.
  • Fruits of the Spirit: Focus on cultivating love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). These qualities counteract the works of the flesh.

3. Renew Your Mind

  • Transformative Thinking: Romans 12:2 urges us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Replace negative, fleshly thoughts with positive, godly ones.
  • Meditation: Spend time meditating on God’s promises and truths.

4. Confession and Repentance

  • Acknowledge Sin: Regularly confess your sins to God and seek His forgiveness. 1 John 1:9 assures us that if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us.
  • Repentance: Genuine repentance involves turning away from sin and making a conscious effort to live righteously.

5. Accountability and Community

  • Fellowship: Surround yourself with fellow believers who can provide support, encouragement, and accountability (Hebrews 10:24-25).
  • Accountability Partners: Having someone to whom you can be accountable helps in maintaining spiritual discipline.

6. Avoid Temptations

  • Guard Your Heart and Mind: Be mindful of what you expose yourself to, whether it’s media, environments, or relationships. Proverbs 4:23 advises us to guard our hearts because everything we do flows from it.
  • Flee Temptation: When faced with temptation, don’t linger. Like Joseph in Genesis 39:12, sometimes the best response is to flee.

7. Engage in Spiritual Disciplines

  • Fasting: Fasting helps in denying the flesh and focusing on spiritual growth.
  • Worship: Regular worship keeps your focus on God and helps in developing a heart of gratitude and reverence.

8. Seek Professional Help if Necessary

  • Counselling: Sometimes overcoming the works of the flesh may require professional help. Christian counselling can provide additional strategies and support.

9. Remember Your Identity in Christ

  • New Creation: 2 Corinthians 5:17 reminds us that in Christ, we are new creations. Embrace your identity as a child of God.
  • Empowerment: Philippians 4:13 says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Believe in the empowerment that comes from Christ.

10. Practice Gratitude and Positivity

  • Thankfulness: Regularly express gratitude for God’s blessings. A positive outlook helps in combating negative thoughts and behaviours.
  • Focus on Positives: Philippians 4:8 encourages us to think about whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable.

CONCLUSION:

Brothers and sisters, the contrast between the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit is a stark reminder of the transformative power of the Gospel. The flesh leads to death and destruction, but the Spirit brings life and peace. Let us examine our lives today.

Are we allowing the Holy Spirit to bear fruit in us, or are we still clinging to the works of the flesh?

By integrating these practices into your life, you can overcome the works of the flesh and live in a manner that is pleasing to God, continually growing in spiritual maturity and Christlikeness.

Let us pray for a renewed commitment to walk by the Spirit, yielding to His work in our lives, so that we may reflect the character of Christ and bring glory to God. Amen.
