THE 'TONGUE'
The tongue is a small member of the body, but it is deadly, deceitful, and can defile the entire body!!
The uncontrolled tongue spew:
- hatred
- spread lies.
- it backbite.
- criticize
- it slander.
The controlled tongue:
- confess that Jesus is Lord
- make peace.
- praise God
- spread the gospel.
- encourages others.
- teach others.
Let's see what the scriptures say about it:
James 3:5-6; 8-10:
5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!
6 And the tongue is a fire,
a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the
whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.
8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an
unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 Therewith bless we
God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the
similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My
brethren, these things ought not so to be.
Psalm 34:13 Keep thy tongue from evil and thy lips from speaking guile.
Proverbs 15:4 A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but
perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.
Psalm 66:17 I
cried unto him with my mouth, and he was extolled with my tongue.
Psalm 120:2 Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying
lips, and from a deceitful tongue.
Psalm 139:4 For
there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O Lord, thou knowest it altogether.
Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the
tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
Philippians 2:11 And
that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God
the Father.
Proverbs 10:20 The
tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little
worth.
Romans 3:13 Their throat
is an open sepulcher; with their tongues, they have used deceit; the poison of
asps is under their lips:
Romans 14:11 For it is
written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every
tongue shall confess to God.
1 John 3:18 My little
children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue: but indeed and in truth.
1 Peter 3:10-11 For he that will love life, and see good
days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that
they speak no guile: Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and
ensue it.
Psalm 15:2-3 He that
walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his
heart. He that
backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up
a reproach against his neighbour.
Isaiah 54:17 No weapon
that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou
shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and
their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord.
Proverbs 12:19 The lip of
truth shall be established forever: but a lying tongue [is] but for a moment.
Proverbs 15:2 The tongue
of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out
foolishness
Proverbs 17:20..... he
that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief
Proverbs 21:6 The getting
of treasures by a lying tongue [is] a vanity tossed to and fro of them that
seek death.
Proverbs 21:23 Whoso
keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.
Proverbs 26:28: A lying tongue hates those it hurts, and a
flattering mouth works ruin.
As believers of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ We should:
“Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth” (Eph. 4:29), rather, put away shameful speaking from your mouth (Col. 3:8).
Colossians 4:6 : Let your
speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought
to answer each person.
Because: I say unto you, that
every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the
day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words, you
will be condemned (Mt. 12:36-37).
